Sandra A. Steele, CPC, CPMA, CEDC As director of the MES coding and billing department, Sandy Steele is one of our resident experts in emergency medicine coding and billing services. Not only is she a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), she is also a Certified Emergency Department Coder (CEDC) and has earned her Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) status, which places her in an elite class of specialists. Since 1983, Sandy has been an integral part of the MES team, providing valuable leadership and educational information to the group. Sandy’s industry involvement includes participation in payer group and educational activities. She is a member of the CHAMPS (Medicaid) workgroup as well as a physician representative of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan Provider Relations Liaison committee. As a resource to these payers, she provides important data to improve reimbursement for emergency medicine physicians. Since 2006 she has been a faculty member of the Straight Talk reimbursement course offered by the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians. This annual program provides valuable information and updates for emergency physicians, coding and billing professionals, and physician group managers.
Oleg Savka Having successfully earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, as well as a Candidate of Economic Sciences degree in his home country, Oleg Savka continued his studies in the States, graduating from Lawrence Tech University with a Master of Science degree in Information Systems. He joined Midwest Emergency Services’ management team in 1998. The importance of technology in our business warrants a highly qualified and forward-thinking manager, and Oleg satisfies that criteria. He is responsible for the integration with client’s EDIS and EHR, allowing MES to efficiently facilitate the seamless exchange of demographic, clinical, and financial information with its clients’ health management systems. As chief security officer, he mandates that our systems comply with HIPAA and HITECH protocols and ISO27000 standards. Through continuing education, Oleg is certified as a Microsoft Professional and has completed training in High Risk Management, Information Systems Security, SQL Server Administration and HL7 version 2.x.
Cynthia A. Nowakowski Cindy Nowakowski began the responsibility of financial management for Midwest Emergency Services, L.L.C. and its clients in March of 2009. With a rich background in finance and accounting, with over ten years of financial management experience, Cindy has the qualifications necessary to assist our clients with their accounting needs. She recently implemented state-of-the-art accounting and payroll processing programs to significantly streamline procedures. Working in tandem with our CPA firm, her department offers the ultimate in service and caters to the busy physician whose focus is on providing patient care. Cindy is also the key administrator of our client benefit plans and works as part of a team at MES to ensure value and quality in this area. She is a graduate of Walsh College in Troy, Michigan, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.
Robert J. Romain, J.D., MBA Robert Romain’s educational credentials, coupled with his work experience (with MES since 1997), has served the physician groups we partner with very well. Not only is Robert an attorney, having earned his Juris Doctorate Cum Laude from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1990, but he also earned an MBA from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in 2007. As our legal manager, Robert provides our MES clients with contract consultation and guidance on diverse legal issues, from malpractice exposure to HIPAA compliance. He understands the issues affecting emergency medicine physicians and hospital emergency departments and can offer an experienced viewpoint. Working with physicians on scheduling matters and involvement in physician recruitment are other areas of his responsibility.

Highly motivated to spread the word on the value of contracting with MES, she is happy to present its services to hospital administrators and physicians. She is an active ambassador for the company and promotes its value, integrity and expertise through several medias. Sandy worked in other areas of the company before earning the sales and marketing position. Her prior work experiences afforded her a strong understanding of the importance of customer service, communication and delivery. She holds an associate degree in accounting from Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and also participates in continuing education programs. |
